Trades & construction RPL pathways

Hands-on experience is a useful starting point for a qualification conversation. Tell us about the projects, tools, responsibilities and site work that make up your day.

Is this the right area for you?

Carpenters, builders, automotive technicians and other experienced trade workers can discuss how their existing skills relate to a qualification. The right pathway depends on the specific occupation and the work you can demonstrate.

What to prepare for a conversation

  • A project list explaining your role and tasks
  • Work samples, plans or job records you are allowed to share
  • References from supervisors or clients who know your work
  • Relevant previous training and tickets
A qualification and an occupational licence are separate. Electrical, plumbing, building and other regulated trades may have specific training, workplace and licensing requirements. Ask the relevant regulator and training provider before choosing a pathway.

Before you choose a provider

Ask for the registered training provider’s name, RTO number and the exact qualification title and code. Discuss which requirements apply to you, what the full fees cover, and what happens if further training is needed.

You can check training providers and their registered scope on training.gov.au. Use our evidence preparation guide to organise your questions.

Your experience. Your next chapter.
